How are you all? I hope you are doing fine. The second wave of coronavirus has hit India. It is much worse than the first wave. With increasing cases every day, raising deaths, and decreased medical facilities, covid has taken a toll on mental health. This week has been the hardest of all. My brother lost one of his closest colleagues due to covid. He was very young. It took us three days to digest that he is no more. I cannot imagine what his family is going through. My best friend’s mom tested positive for covid. I listen and see her suffer every day and I feel helpless. I am sure I am not the only one who is going through tough times. I open social media every day and end up watching lakhs of people crying for help. It’s heartbreaking to listen to their stories. Although India has experienced covid last year, it’s more devastating this year. Day by day it feels very close and I cannot help but think ‘What if my family gets in contact with the virus?’, ‘What if we test positive?’, ‘What if something serious happens?’. I talk to my friends only to find out they feel the same. Everyone here is sacred, anxious, uncertain about what happens next. Nothing feels safer anymore and I question myself every day ‘How did we get to this point?’ Just when everyone thought things were getting back to normal and safer due to the arrival of vaccination, covid has hit hard. The death rate has increased this year due to a lack of oxygen cylinders, beds, and medical facilities but the fact that so many require medical care in the first place is something that everyone should start thinking about. Everyone around me says that the government failed to control the pandemic, it neglected and did not act early. I couldn’t agree more but later I realized many who blame the government, are the people who go out for every single thing. The public is no better than the government. Two days ago, when I and my brother went out for a medical emergency, I saw many who did not wear a mask. A man spat in the middle of the road. There is no social distancing, especially near vaccination centers. Despite all the horrible consequences, we are still failing to maintain basic hygiene practices. Why? Negligence? I hope not. A few days ago, I watched a video of a couple who were found screaming at Delhi police because they were stopped for not wearing a mask. Here is the link to the video.

Every single day I wake up from bed and hope to see things going back to normal. I know every one of us does. No one wants to live in fear every second. The only way to achieve that ‘Is to take precautionary measures and follow covid protocols without a miss’. As a friend and fellow Indian citizen, ‘I request you to not go out unnecessarily, sanitize your hands, wear a mask if you have to go out and immediately seek help if u feel a change in your health’. Do not risk your life and your family with carelessness. You don’t have to lock yourself inside of four walls. That only increases anxiety. Trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle i.e., little exercise, eating the right food, and having proper sleep is the key to overcome the anxiety. Ask yourself ‘Does your current lifestyle helps you to step forward?’ I know it is harder to implement than said. Starting a new habit and sticking to it is indeed difficult in the beginning but those tiny steps help you and your family to a greater extent. So here are the ways you can cope up and spend your time during home isolation.
Ways to cope up:
- Work, Work and Work
Two days ago, when I stepped out of the house and saw people working every day, I realized life is still normal behind the pandemic. As of now, fortunately, many are working from home. To the students who don’t have regular classes, indulge yourself in small tasks, have daily targets like studying a topic per day or working on a creative task or in group projects. It is true that time goes on no matter what and focusing on our professional lives and career goals a little by little every day will only help us to move forward.
2. Divert your mind: A little relaxations
- Switch on to your favorite shows or read your favorite books
- Watch a movie with your family or spend time with your loved ones.
- Discuss, communicate and be in touch with the people you like and care about, the safer you feel, the less anxious you are.
- Have a morning or an evening walk on your terrace or a balcony with your favorite music.
- Take time to enjoy nature or grow plants on your balcony if you have space.
- Little hobbies like drawing, writing, singing, dancing, cooking, or playing indoor games with your family, etc. will help you to release stress
- Maintain personal hygiene. Exercise or do yoga, meditation, or Zumba which you enjoy the most.
- Maintain a personal diary. Write down your thoughts every day. Or say your negative thoughts loud and breathe.
- Appreciate yourself when you accomplished your daily targets. A little appreciation goes a long way.
- Accept that you might not be productive every day. It’s okay to not reach your targets for a few days. Remember you are doing a great job.
- Dress up and wear your favorite makeup once in a while even if you don’t go out. Look at yourself in the mirror and appreciate your beauty. Everyone is beautiful in their way.
- When the news of coronavirus is overwhelming, take a step back from social media, play your favorite characters, talk to yourself and skip to your fantasy world for few moments. Doing this also helps you to understand yourself and your inner thoughts more
- Stay away from people who are toxic and cause you more anxiety and stress. Remember it is okay to draw boundaries.
In the end, do what’s best for you and what you enjoy the most. Remember to take precautions and follow covid protocol because ‘You are Important and Your Safety is Crucial’
Lastly, volunteer and donate plasma if you have recovered from covid. All the precautionary measures are taken in the hospitals to ensure your safety. Any organization is of no use if they have no resources. ‘Help the People in Need and Be a Hero in Real Life’
